Security Cameras
July 4th, 2009
Pixim Inc., a leading provider of image
sensors and processors for enterprise security cameras, announced that
Coship Electronics Co., Ltd., of Shenzhen, China, has introduced wide
dynamic range IP video cameras integrating Pixims award-winning Digital
Pixel System technology.
The Coship CN68-80C wide dynamic range IP camera and CN68-80CW wireless
wide dynamic range IP camera, which use Pixim Orca D1600 chipsets, are
designed for a broad range of security applications requiring networked
cameras. In addition, IP cameras are better suited to remote security
needs.
“Pixims Digital Pixel System technology offers the widest dynamic range
available, enabling our cameras to produce excellent image quality and
color rendering, regardless of the lighting conditions where the camera is
located,” said Yang Weimin, RD manager, vice president of Coship security
business unit. “In addition, Pixims all-digital video capture system
provides the ability to directly output the digital video signal of our new
IP cameras, to maintain the highest possible image integrity and full
resolution, from pixel to packet.”
Pixims Digital Pixel System technology is the only video image capture
technology to employ hundreds of thousands of pixels, each acting like an
individual camera. These self-adjusting pixels deliver the highest total
resolution, natural color and clarity — in all lighting conditions.
Cameras incorporating the Digital Pixel System are able to produce
accurate, high-quality images even in environments with variable or
high-contrast lighting, glare, reflection and other lighting challenges.
The new Coship wired and wireless wide dynamic range IP cameras provide
high resolution; MPEG-4 compression format; support for both static and
dynamic IP; an embedded web browser; built-in 802.11b/g wireless protocol
(in the CN68-80CW wireless model); security features such as digital
watermark and authority protection; audio broadcast and audio/image
synchronization; and adjustable brightness, saturation, sharpness and hue.

Discovering what outdoor activities people most enjoy is key in planning and providing outdoor recreation opportunities. Therefore, surveys that assess public demand are vital components of any successful program. In the past, needs assessments and participation studies used in outdoor recreation plans and, in particular, the Arizona Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP) have not incorporated the needs and desires of young people. This generally is because survey methods such as telephone surveys have been more geared toward adults. However, young people represent a sizable segment of our population that places a heavy demand on our resources. The Arizona Outdoor Recreation Coordinating Commission and the Arizona State Parks Board recognized this oversight in our planning and, as a result, proposed a study to gather the needed recreation data from Arizona youth. The information gathered in this study helped us target young people with our programs, thereby increasing their participation in and enjoyment of these activities. In a day and age when young people often feel alienated from and ignored by the adult world, park and recreation programs that address young peoples interests likely will be more effective in keeping kids in sports and recreation programs and away from the dangers of the streets.

fumigation
July 2nd, 2009
Produce Safety Security International Inc.
(OTC: PDSC) (”PDSC”), a sanitation disinfectant process supplier to the
food and medical industries, is pleased to announce that it has received
favorable test results for its Ozone Gas, for grain, as well as fruits and
vegetables, domestic and export fumigation applications.
PDSC plans to use many prototype units for a more extensive research and
expand the potential applications for the process. The ozone process is
much safer, as it leaves no residue, and removes the possibility of
sickness caused by the chemicals currently used by the fumigation industry,
like Methyl Bromide, which is being discontinued as an approved fumigant.
Implementation of this process is planed to begin as the equipment becomes
available from the manufacturer.
Clarence W. Karney, CEO of PDSC, said, “We are pleased with the results and
believe this speaks volumes for the process versatility. The ozone process
is a safe alternative to many of the traditional methods used in the
fumigation of grains, fruits and vegetables. We think Ozone gas process
will be used by many of the USAs largest trading partners, as well,
including Chile, Mexico, Peru, South Africa, Europe, New Zealand and
Australia.”
The Ozone Gas Process has been studied and tested by several Major
Universities in the United States including University California Davis,
Cornell University, University of Georgia, University of Michigan, Michigan
State University, San Diego State, as well as several Foreign Universities.
Tokyo, Aug 23, 2005 - (JCN) - Showa Denko (TSE: 4004) announced on August 22 that its wholly owned subsidiary Kokusai Eisei has developed a high-speed fumigation system designed for use in grain and food warehouses. The new system, which uses the companys proprietary fumigant Fumitoxin, can thoroughly fumigate a site in 24 hours. Further, it can completely dissolve the fumigant so that no residue processing is needed.

Catherine Matheson [*] NAVAJO FAMILIES WHO HAVE CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES In the United States, many have come to believe that families and family involvement are the most important factors in supporting children with disabilities. Families exist within an ecocultural environment that is complex and powerful, and it is within the family context that development in all its forms begins and is nurtured. We cannot understand what family involvement means without understanding the culture of families and the informal systems that families use to adapt and operate. In this chapter, the example of Navajo families with children with disabilities underscores and shows in high relief the heavy reliance on cultural support for families that is part of any family system. As early-intervention and family support programs continue to grow in the United States, we need to understand and sustain those benefits of indigenous systems that provide support and relief to families even as we seek to engage families in the use of supports that may be offered by private and public agencies. Two complementary systems operate to fulfill the needs of Navajo and other American families who have children with disabilities: one is the indigenous adaptive system and the other is the public health system that has been established nationally in the United States with local options. One example is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 1997), parts B and C, providing early intervention, preschool, and school-age services. The indigenous system was in existence long before the IDEA, but has not been recognized as such. Both systems attempt to increase the well-being of families, but because all adaptive systems have a cost, neither system is totally benign. Each system extracts some payment for the benefits it provides. When discussing costs, our intent is not so much to point out financial costs, which are often involved, but to show that costs to families can be more subtle, such as the erosion of family responsibility and satisfaction with the efforts the family makes on behalf of the child with a disability. Thus, in the Navajo sample, families identified medical disabilities and sought help for medical problems from professionals but were sometimes unable to resolve their anxiety until they involved spiritual services or indigenous healing practices. Conversely, Navajo families did not identify learning disorders in the preschool age group that we interviewed. Learning and language disabilities were primarily identified by professionals and schools, who in turn sometimes found families apprehensive and reluctant to adopt an active role in early-intervention efforts that they had not sought themselves.
Many family practice residencies include the teaching of family systems theory and family therapy in their behavioral science curriculum. A review of the literature demonstrates that family medicine is attempting to incorporate a family systems perspective into its skills. [1-5] The authors of this paper perceived a need to design a framework for conducting a single-session family interview that is structured, goal directed, and of practical use to the family physician when dealing with illness management, family decision making, and adjustment reactions. The physician, while not a therapist to the family, is often in a position to help family members talk to each other about a painful topic, to help them acknowledge and accept angry feelings so that they can move toward more constructive behaviors, to reassure them that what they are doing is enough, or to help them plan for the future. The importance of the family has been demonstrated in various medical situations: definitions of the nature and seriousness of symptoms, [6] family members love and support as a risk-lowering factor, [7] family stress levels affecting health,8 decisions on health care utilization,l family support as a predictor of the patients level of cooperation with physician advice, and family as the social group most immediately affected by illness and medical treatment. [9] In addition, by respecting the role that family members play in patient problems, the physician can help to create an emotional climate in which patients are unlikely to perceive the physician as being negligent. [10] The guidelines presented in this paper are useful to faculty who are teaching in residency programs and for physicians in community practice. The family interview outline integrates family systems concepts with the basic tools of medical interviewing. This interview format can be integrated into the behavioral science curriculum of family practice residencies as a learning objective for residents. In the family practice residency at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, the interview format is demonstrated at a monthly conference in which a case presented by a resident is followed by a family interview that the family therapy consultant and presenting resident conduct together. On an ongoing basis, residents are encouraged to schedule family interviews that employ this format and to obtain supervision and consultation from behavioral science faculty members when planning this intervention.

fast weight loss
June 30th, 2009
This is part 4 of 12 in the series on weight management for people with spinal-cord impairments (SCI). This months focus is on setting personal goals. Goals give you purpose and direction and keep you on track to better health. You probably had a “goal weight” in mind when you started a weight-loss program. It is important to remember that losing weight too quickly puts you at risk for health problems such as gall stones, electrolyte imbalance, and lean-muscle loss. In fact, any weight loss can improve health for people who are obese. It is better to maintain a moderate weight loss over a prolonged period than to regain from a marked weight loss. A person who is obese and weighs 250 pounds might lose as much as 5 pounds in a week, which is about 2%. Someone who is overweight and weighs 200 pounds might lose as much as 2 pounds in one week, which is about 1%. The rate at which you lose weight declines over time because your body metabolism slows down with weight loss. Research shows that in a well-designed weight-loss program, it is generally achievable to lose weight by about 10% in six months. If this initial target is achieved, fuller weight loss can be considered. Diet and physical activity usually need to be revised in six months to continue to lose weight.

One of the distinguishing features of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, (1) and its five-year follow-up by a special session of the UN General Assembly in 1999 (ICPD + 5) (2) is that they moved beyond rhetoric to define reproductive health, including sexual health, in the context of primary health care and to provide countries with specific goals, objectives, and targets, in order to provide quality sexual and reproductive health information and services. These reflect an international consensus on what needs to be achieved, requiring a combination of programme initiatives, public health policies, legislation, educational capacity building and community-wide efforts. Until recently, little interest has been expressed by medical educators in integrating sexual and reproductive health in the medical curriculum. Significantly, no international group that is representative of medical educators or the medical profession attended either ICPD in 1994 or the 1999 Special Session of the UN General Assembly, with the exception of the Commonwealth Medical Association.

spiritual healing melbourne
June 30th, 2009
Magazine covering literature features capsule reviews and information about books.
Recent research and clinical experience suggest that clients are increasingly expecting that psychotherapists will deal with their spiritual concerns that are traditionally addressed in spiritual direction. This expectation has already begun to impact the practice of psychotherapy by increasing interest in the “spiritually-oriented-psychotherapies.” This article proposes that psychotherapy can become more receptive and effective in dealing with spiritual concerns by appropriately incorporating some or many of the functions of spiritual direction. The practice of spiritual direction is first described and compared to pastoral counseling and spiritually-oriented psychotherapy. Then eight functions of spiritual direction are presented and compared to similar “functions” in psychotherapy. Finally, specific recommendations for incorporating these functions into the practice of psychotherapy are discussed. Believing that spirituality is vital for growth and essential for dealing with lifes problems, many individuals are pursuing a journey of spiritual growth. Pursuing this journey typically involves a commitment to engaging in spiritual practices such as prayer and meditation. As a result of this pursuit, some are finding their lives are more centered and fulfilling, whereas others are finding themselves trapped in old feelings, attitudes, and habits that appear to undo their progress. Even those who have made progress on the journey often encounter spiritual and psychological roadblocks to growth. But fewer are approaching the institutional church for help with these concerns. Why is this? Presumably because of “spiritual homelessness,” that is, the experience of no longer feeling at home in ones religious traditions or with ministry personnel (Steere, 1997). Similarly, Jean Stairs (2000, p. 3) describes this phenomenon as “(t)he world is crying out for the church to be more the like the church, to represent the space and place where holiness, meaning, and God can be found, experienced, understood, and reimagined.” Because of the extent of spiritual homelessness, it should not be surprising that many are turning to psychotherapy rather than to ministers for spiritual advice. It should also be noted that those who are already in psychotherapy expect that therapy will focus on their spiritual concerns (Westfeld, 2001). These observations raise a number of questions. Are spiritual concerns appropriate and proper for psychotherapy? Shouldnt these individuals be seeking spiritual direction or pastoral counseling instead? Can psychotherapy become more receptive to these spiritual concerns? If so, how?
Being Bullied
June 29th, 2009
LETTERS TO A BULLIED GIRL: MESSAGES OF HEALING AND HOPE Bullying is part of every childs life. Think about it: Every kid has either been bullied, bullied someone else, or witnessed acts of bullying. The book Letters to a Bullied Girl: Messages of Healing and Hope (Harper, 2008) attempts to teach readers the real consequences of bullying so that kids wont resort to teasing, taunting, and hounding their peers. The books approach works terrifically. The book consists of letters written about the subject of bullying. Some of the letter writers are former bullies, some are victims of bullying, and some are the parents of either bullies or victims of bullying. All the letters were addressed to one girl, Olivia Gardner, a teen who was bullied for many years. Two sisters, Emily and Sarah Buder, heard about Olivias plight and organized a letter-writing campaign on behalf of Olivia. More than 4,000 letters were written, leading to the creation of Letters to a Bullied Girl.
School counselors responded to an Internet survey containing vignettes describing physical, verbal, and relational bullying. Respondents rated relational bullying the least serious of the three types, they had the least empathy for victims of relational bullying, and they were least likely to intervene in relational bullying incidents. Counselors with anti-bullying training rated relational bullying as more serious and were more likely to intervene in relational bullying incidents than were those without training. Implications for counselor education are discussed. School bullying was once considered a childhood ritual or a normal part of development and was therefore often overlooked or ignored by school personnel. However, research has found that bullying is not a harmless phenomenon; rather, it is a widespread and serious problem that must be addressed (Espelage Swearer, 2003; Hoover Oliver, 1996; Nansel et al., 2001; Olweus, 1993). Bullying has negative consequences for victims, for bullies, and for school climate (Berthold Hoover, 2000; Olweus; Payne Gottfredson, 2004). A large body of research on bullying exists in Australia, Canada, Europe, and Japan, and recognition of the magnitude and effects of bullying is growing in the United States, as researchers, educators, and lawmakers address this problem with concern. There is a general agreement that for a behavior to be considered bullying, it must have three elements: It must be intended to harm, it must be repetitive, and a difference of power–physical, social, or other–must exist between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993). Bullying is a subset of aggression that is typically categorized as physical, verbal, or relational (Shore, 2005). Physical bullying tends to receive more attention from school personnel, and this includes behaviors such as hitting, kicking, or any form of overt violence toward another student. Many schools have developed zero tolerance policies for violent behavior, prioritizing physical bullying over other forms of bullying (Limber Small, 2003). Verbal bullying refers to name calling, teasing, and verbal threats. Relational bullying is a form of social isolation that includes behaviors such as gossiping, intentionally leaving students out of activities, spreading rumors, and other measures that seek to change peer groups (Olweus, 1993). Bjorkqvist, Lagerspetz, and Kaukiainen (1992) described relational bullying as an “attempt to inflict pain in such a manner that he or she makes it seem as though there has been no intention to hurt at all” (p. 118).

DUI Attorney Portland
June 28th, 2009
Daily newspaper from Salt Lake City, Utah was first published in 1850. Articles cover local news, business and entertainment.
Defense attorneys for a municipal court judge who is being sued by prosecutors for not dismissing a DUI case so it could be heard in a higher court say the judge was simply trying to be careful with a case that encountered many delays. The prosecutors, meanwhile, insist they had no other recourse. And the lawyer for the woman in the DUI case says hes puzzled by the whole thing. Lohra and Lorenzo Miller, prosecutors for Taylorsville, filed a civil lawsuit in 3rd District Court Monday naming Judge Michael Kwan, who works in the Taylorsville Municipal Court. The suit asks the district court to find that Kwan exceeded his authority in a DUI case and asked that the municipal case be dismissed. It involves Kristine Schofield, who was stopped March 27, 2004 and given a criminal citation for DUI. The civil lawsuit says Schofield has a history of DUI arrests and at the time this occurred, her blood alcohol content was 0.33, or more than four times the legal limit. The Millers sought to have the case moved to district court so it could be prosecuted as a felony by the Salt Lake District Attorneys Office.

Carlene Walker, R-Cottonwood Heights, that requires people with two DUI violations to have an interlock system installed in their cars passed the House Transportation Committee on Thursday. The interlock systems force the driver to breathe into ignition interlock device before the car can start. The offender, under SB4, would pay installation and maintenance costs for the system. Paul Boyden, the director of the Utah Prosecutors Association, and Kim Gibb from the states driver license division testified on behalf of the bill. Jason Schatz, a DUI defense attorney, was also on hand to express some frustrations with SB4 and with current Utah DUI law. He said the bill was created using only input from one side of the legal system. The committee voted unanimously to pass the bill on with a favorable recommendation.

Many nurses may be familiar with life coaching or executive coaching. Coaching is a partnership between coach and client. The coaching process is designed to support clients as they work toward fulfilling personal and professional goals. While life and executive coaching may be the most well-known forms of coaching, the approach and methods of coaching have been extrapolated into other areas or niches. One of these is AD/HD coaching. “A designed partnership that combines coaching skills with knowledge of attention deficit disorder, a neurobiological condition. The coaching process enhances quality of life, improves performance, and supports growth and change. The purpose of AD/HD coaching is to provide support, structure, and accountability. Coach and client collaboratively explore strengths, talents, tools, and new learning to increase self-awareness and personal empowerment. Together they design strategies and actions and monitor progress by creating accountability in line with goals and aspirations” (IAAC, 2007). AD/HD coaching was brought into the spotlight as an intervention for the treatment of adult AD/HD by Hallowell and Ratey (1994) in their seminal book, Driven to Distraction. At that time, professionals focused mainly on educational accommodations and therapy for children and teens with AD/HD. Little had been written about coaching for youth with AD/HD, and the focus on youth coaching was centered on academics. Academic and educational coaches were available to students needing support, with a strong recommendation of academic coaching for struggling students with AD/HD and learning disabilities. Help4ADD@HighSchool (Nadeau, 1998) was one of the first books to discuss AD/HD coaching on a larger scale, reaching beyond simply academic coaching. In her book, Dr. Nadeau states, “Coaching is one of the best ways to deal with your ADD. A coach provides external structure and support, and teaches [you] how to develop your own internal structure” (p. 62). Coaching helps children and teens with AD/HD with several key challenges they face. First, coaching helps a child/teen learn techniques for maintaining focus, stay on task, and improve time management and organizational skills. The development of these skills can contribute to smoother family life and improved school performance. These skills are also the building blocks for future success. Second, by initiating the coaching process with school-aged children, coaches are able to help students with AD/HD avoid frustration and keep motivated, as well as help them build self-confidence and self-awareness during the formative years. Third, most children benefit from daily routines and structures, and building structure and predictability through routines is an effective tool for parents of challenging children with AD/HD (Heininger Weiss, 2001). Yet, routines can be difficult for the child with AD/HD to maintain, and a busy parent can easily be thrown off a routine when a child has AD/HD. Additionally, many parents of children and teens with AD/HD have attentional issues themselves and find it difficult to keep up with a plan on a daily basis. With the support of a well-trained AD/HD coach (IAAC, 2007), effective structure and routines can be developed and sustained, facilitating the consistency that allows children with AD/HD and related behavioral issues to thrive. This can be done with support, care, and humor to protect and build the self-esteem of everyone involved.

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Beautiful Forever, a New York-based medical spa business development company, announced today that its newest project, the medical spa at Miamis Four Season Hotel Towers, exceeded its first month projections - demonstrating that consumers are embracing medical spas with increased enthusiasm. Beautiful Forever helped launch The MIAMI Institute for Age Management Intervention, an advanced surgery center and medical spa dedicated to enhancing personal appearance, health and well being, last month. Julio F. Gallo, M.D., FACS, co-founder, The MIAMI Institute for Age Management Intervention, says, “We are heartened by the outpouring of interest in our new medical spa. Beautiful Forevers research and business development counseling was pivotal to our launch, and no doubt to the huge success we are already experiencing after just opening our doors last month.” Adds Dr. Gallo, “Cheryl has an amazing ability to combine business knowledge, marketing expertise and operational know-how with other aspects of medical and aesthetic treatments. She seems to know what will be hot before it is. She has been an invaluable asset in setting up the aesthetic treatments and office structure of our new comprehensive medical spa and cosmetic surgery center.” Cheryl Whitman, CEO, Beautiful Forever, says, “The medical spa business is an exciting trend, quickly gaining traction across the country. Consumers want more than they can get at the traditional day spa. They want a one-stop beauty destination where they can receive pampering as well as some on trend cosmetic and aesthetic procedures.” Adds Whitman, “Todays increasingly competitive work environment, coupled with the high concentration of baby boomers all vying for the same jobs, makes looking good and feeling good as important as the daily ritual of brushing our teeth. The medical spa business is growing in direct proportion to the needs of the discerning consumer.”
